The Courting Candle was heavily used in early America between the 1600’s and the 1800’s when the communities had a sense of Family morality. It was used by a Daughters Father to control the setting of the courtship.

In 1600’s to 1800’s America, courting candles were used by fathers to set dating boundaries for their children. When suitors came calling the father lit the candle in the sitting room where the couple conversed. When the candle burned to the metal loop at the top of the candle holder, it was time for the suitor to promptly leave. However, the father could change the height of the candle based on how comfortable he felt about the suitor, effectively adding a ‘parental control’ to the length of the date!
This holds 3/4″ diameter candles. Pictured here with a 3/4″ diameter x 7″ tall candle.
